Prepare Now: How to Upload Your Home Inventory and Important Documents Before You Evacuate
If you ever have just minutes to evacuate your home in a natural disaster, you will want to have already uploaded your important legal, financial, medical documents and home inventory to a safe online platform. Just a few months after hurricane Helene devastated the mountain communities of western North Carolina, where I live, my friends and clients in LA were evacuating because of fires. In affected communities, often families only had minutes to get out safely.
In my decluttering and organizing class, I have a whole unit on preparing for emergencies. One of the most vital tips I share in that unit is to prepare ahead of time:
Make a video record of each room in your home, opening all the closets, cupboards, drawers and mentioning the value of the art, furniture, rugs and unique items in your home.
Gather all your important legal, financial and medical documents into a fireproof box that you can easily grab and go.
Also, take photos of these documents and upload them to safe, secure storage.
In this 12-minute video, photo organizer Dorothy Tucker, of Preserving Your Heritage, talks about the benefits of creating a free, safe and secure FOREVER account and demonstrates how easy it is to upload your home inventory and important documents. The 1-2 hours you spend doing this may save you hundreds of hours of research if you ever lose your home in natural disaster—and it could save your life, as every minute counts if you ever have to evacuate.
